THE TITLE At the age of seventeen I discovered T.S. Eliot's poem “The Wasteland.” The only part of the poem I could relate to was about “Madame Sosostris, famous clairvoyante.” Four of the tarot cards are invented by Eliot (Drowned Phoenician Sailor, Belladonna, the Lady of the Rocks and the Lady of Situations). Having invented my own Drom Ek Romani cards as part of my heritage, I could appreciate his imaginary cards with their mystical names. My first poem explains each tarot card and the second one details the Drom Romani although I make no claim to be a “famous clairvoyante.” The other poems are a patchwork of subjects including tributes to Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, and other writers of music and poetry. THE POEMS With the exception of several free verse poems, the others are a mixture of Shakespearean Sonnets, Terza Rima, Rima Royale, and, well, more sonnets. The poetry forms are very confining yet I attempted to make them all-encompassing in their little world. When writing the 22 sonnets for the Drom Romani I began speaking in rhyming iambic pentameter in my dreams. Does that make me a poet? I hope so. Failing that, a sonnet a day keeps senility away. I am hoping that whatever your age, you find enjoyment in my poetry.

**I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for my fair and honest review.**“Madame Sosostris Explains (a poetry patchwork)” by Clarissa Simmens is an incredibly beautiful yet complex collection of poems. Surrounding the Romani culture, these poems have a deep sense of tradition. One can almost feel the richness behind them when turning the pages. I am a newcomer to these things, yet I felt welcome into a world I know nothing about, and I was an eager student as I read the poems. The first poems consist of tarot card poems, while the rest are made up of sonnets and free verse. No matter which sets of poems you read, they are consistently well-written and a great glimpse into this world. Simmens knows her poetry and she knows how to bring images to life using minimal words. Another amazing collection by a promising poet!

Madame Sosostris Explains a poetry patchwork Clarissa Simmens 9781495355714 Books Reviews
Let me first say that I learned a lot in delving into this poetry book. I'm not someone who is well versed in tarot cards or the Romani culture. This made it a very interesting and enlightening read for me. No poem stood out, as they all touched me in some way.
I have one other poetry book by Clarissa to read and I can't wait to start reading it!
I just loved this book. The writings of Ms. Simmens are both original and heartfelt. Her insightful knowledge of Romany, tarot and life itself is enlightening and thought provoking. It is obvious that Ms Simmens writes from the soul and in reading her poetry I have found that it has touched mine. I highly recommend this book for I promise it will touch a part of you.
This book has such deep sensitivity and obviously Ms. Simmens knows quite a bit about Gypsy culture. I have read a few of her other books, and plan to read Drab Lil after reading the comments. I know I will reread this book many times, or at least turn to some of the poetry to find some joy on days to come. The language and meanings in this book are both rich and heartfelt. This piece will get to you. Im not a fan of all poetry, and find some of it rather boring, but this book brings poetry to life! What a beautiful piece this is! Thank you for your writings, Ms. Simmens and I await your next book. Possibly another novel?
This book is the perfect companion to “Drab Lil, A Gypsy’s Medicine Book,” an insightful book of Gypsy customs and beliefs. The first twenty-two poems of “Madame Sosostris Explains” coincide with the first twenty-two chapters of Drab Lil, and I found myself re-reading Drab Lil, with a better understanding of the very personal meaning of each of the Drom Ek Romani. The author, again emphasizing her Romani background, has shared her beliefs, her history, her life, and her dreams in this sensitive collection of poetry that begs to be read and re-read. From the bittersweet “Phuri Dai (Wise Woman/Grandmother)” to the light-hearted “Born to Shop,” I found this poetry delightful.
This is an extraordinarily written piece. The vocabulary is extremely rich and definitely one that everyone would love to love (at least everyone that I know). The writing is very origional and creative. This is a book that I can read over and over again and still love. I still love it.
‘Madame Sosostris Explains’ starts off with some clever and well written Romani influenced poems. Clarissa Simmen’s poems are lyrical and full of mystic. It is obvious that her culture has influenced her poems to a great degree and through her poems you get a peek into the gypsy way. Her later poems are more introspective, more about herself, her family and her life. I’m not an expert on poetry. I like some and others bore me. I enjoyed my evening with ‘Madame Sosostris Explains’. Thanks Clarissa Simmens!
This is one of the most original, most creative books I have ever experienced. The book is influenced by T.S.Eliot's "The Wasteland" and the four tarot cards he developed.
Not only does Ms. Simmens, the poet writer, create her own deck of tarot cards, based on the teachings of her Romani ancestry, she gives us further insight into how she creates and writes, and even shares her Muses with us.
I love this book and read the entire book in one sitting.
Original + artistically imaginative = 5 Stars.
